If you want to be completely overwhelmed with mountains, wildflowers, hiking and a storybook town go here. If you are boring and don’t want to do things that increase your endorphins go somewhere else.

Where to stay: There are plenty of places to stay here, but if you are looking for big name hotels like Marriott, which is what we usually book with because of points, there aren't any. I looked for the most affordable that also had a good view. I usually book with VRBO, but somehow ended up finding a place on Vacasa.com. We stayed within walking distance of the Crested Butte Mountain Resort. The location was great. About a 10 minute drive from town. Views of both the Crested Butte and Whitestone Mountain.

Here is the condo we stayed in if you are interested in viewing it.

The pros and cons of our condo:

Cons: The whole building was outdated including the condo itself. The bathroom door didn’t lock. The front door was tricky to lock. There were no ceiling fans and no air conditioning. A lot of places here don’t have air conditioning but it gets kinda hot during the day so it would have been nice to have a ceiling fan. There was a floor fan.

The pros: big balcony with beautiful views. Kitchen and bathrooms had everything we needed. Clean. Even though it was outdated it was still very comfortable and cozy. The evenings and mornings were perfect weather. We opened the doors, had coffee on the patio.

The view from the balcony at sunset.

There are tons of hiking trails and we only did two so I would recommend using this website to research the trails. it is a fantastic website about CB and they are actually very responsive if you message them. I used Facebook messenger with questions about a few trails that were still closed in July because of all the snow.

We hiked around Mount Crested Butte one day when my son and husband decided we should rent mountain bikes, more about that on another post. I wanted to get a feel for the terrain before I decided if I wanted to do it. You can read all about that fiasco on the blog titled CB mountain Biking. Fun and terrifying is how I would summarize my experience.

Here are the views from hiking around the mountain near the base. It’s so beautiful it is very difficult to pick just a few pictures.
